Slovenia expects that the coalition will remain dedicated to finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and respect universal principles of democratic rule and human rights, the press release said.

Slovenia's position on Syrian crisis on principle remains unchanged: the lion's share of responsibility for the situation in the country is borne by the regime in Damascus; the violence and human rights violations must stop immediately; crimes against humanity must be investigated and the perpetrators held responsible; and the humanitarian crisis must be addressed in a coordinated effort.

Slovenia has made its position on Syria clear on several occasions. Among other things, the country donated EUR 60,000 for a UNCHR programme providing aid to the Syrians who had to flee their homes.

In May 2012, Slovenia also labelled Syrian non-residential ambassador a persona non-grata. Moreover, a Slovenian soldier was deployed to Syria as part of UN mission UNSMIS.

Slovenia will continue to support the work of the UN's and Arab League's special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

The country also expects of the UN Security Council members to overcome their differences and draft a resolution condemning with appropriate sharpness the situation in Syria.
