This is second gold at a world championship for Maze after she won the giant slalom event in 2011, and her sixth medal in a major competition. She also won silver in the super-G at the last Olympic games in 2010.

The race was postponed by three hours due to poor weather conditions, but Maze said that had never been a problem for her.

"I focused and thought to myself that we would start the race at 2:30 considering the weather, which is what happened."

Maze was considered the favourite for the super-G win, having dominated the event this year. "A super-G race is over in one minute. You don't get a second chance and I'm happy it went so well."

Indeed, commentators are certain she will top the medal rankings of the 32nd World Championship, after she bagged seven wins and a total of 17 podiums from 25 World Cup races this season.

Some commentators have even suggested that she was likely to win medals in all five events.

The race was overshadowed by a serious crash of four-time overall World Cup winner Lindsey Vonn, who was helicoptered to hospital and is reported to have ruptured ligaments in her right knee.

"I was shocked when I saw how high the jump was...It's too bad she crashed so badly, but if you go full-on not being 100% prepared, mistakes quickly happen. Skiing is a very dangerous sport," she said.

"If you went into the jump with high speed - which she undoubtedly had - you flew very far and had to react very fast."

Congratulations have been pouring in for Maze, including from Education, Science, Culture and Sport Minister Žiga Turk and Prime Minister Janez Janša.

Janša said Maze had "proved once again in changeable and demanding conditions that you are capable of overcoming even the most unexpected obstacles."

Maze's coach and the head of her team Andrea Massi regretted Vonn's accident, saying it was not her fault but the softened piste. "What Tina has done in a race like this and with this starting number is unbelievable," said Massi.
