Support for Jazbec as New Central Bank Governor Seems Secured

The SLS and NSi expressed their support for Jazbec in today's consultations with President Borut Pahor, who already met with the remaining factions in parliament on Wednesday.

The SocDems and Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) were the only ones refusing to reveal their choice, while all the other parties openly backed Jazbec, which indicates his appointment is certain. He needs 46 votes in parliament, but seems to have already secured more than 60.

Matej Tonin of New Slovenia (NSi) suggested that the appointment of Jazbec with a large majority would be an important precedent, which he sees as a reason for hope.

Tonin, who noted Jazbec simply has the most impressive CV among the candidates, hopes the former member of the governing board of Banka Slovenije will also see this as a great responsibility.

The SLS's Mihael Prevc said the choice was easy, as the banking system needs a fresh momentum and someone who is "not burdened by Slovenia's banking transition".

While pointing to the SLS's insistence on the need for accountability on the part of the central bank, Prevc highlighted Jazbec's credentials and international experience.

Jazbec is one of the three candidates vying to succeed Marko Kranjec, whose term ends on 16 July. Law Faculty professor Franjo Štiblar, considered an expert on the banking system and an opponent of the privatisation of Slovenian banks, and present vice-governor Janez Fabijan are the other two applicants.

Pahor is expected to ask his pick to present his programme to deputy groups before parliament takes a vote on the candidate. The vote needs to be taken within 30 days after the president officially puts forward his candidate.
