DeSUS Risking Split; Gantar Takes over As Interim Leader

Nekategorizirano

The DeSUS executive committee met for an emergency session on Thursday morning after Erjavec announced he was suspending his leadership and would quit the party unless the recently elected DeSUS council president Meta Vesel Valentinčič is replaced.

Valentinčič, who was one of the two candidates challenging Erjavec for presidency in the 1 March congress, would not comment the developments for the STA ahead of today's session, but Gantar, who was empowered by Erjavec to take over as interim leader, suggested the group headed by Valentinčič should withdraw.

The solution to the present situation is for "those who have been trying to bring disunity into the party to withdraw". Unless that happens, the likeliest scenario is for a part of the party's leadership and the deputy group to quit DeSUS and start on its won, said Gantar, who plans to go with Erjavec.

Gantar suggested a way out was for the party council to take a revote on the president or offer an alternative solution. "The form depends on the council, but the party ought to decide a single path it will take.

The executive committee is still in session deliberating on further steps.
