New "Funny" Speculation: Slovenia Record-Holder in Corruption?

The share of managers who believe that bribery and corrupt practices happen widely in business in their country is at 96% for Slovenia, which is the highest share in among all countries involved in the survey.

In Europe, Slovenia is followed by Croatia with 90% and Ukraine with 85%. Corruption is the least widespread in Switzerland, where only 10% of managers assessed that corruption is very much present in their business environment.

The European average stands at 39%, while the average for all countries included in the survey is at 57%.

Meanwhile, a total of 26% of all respondents said bribery was common practice for winning contracts in their sector, while the share for Slovenia was at 46%.

Most respondents said they felt growing pressure to meet the goals of investors or owners and boost financial results. This is most felt in Ireland (80%) and the least in Turkey (32%). Slovenia ranked ninth with 67%, behind Norway (74%) and Greece (66%).

In terms of promoting the business or "cooking the books", Slovenia ranked second with 66% of the respondents admitting that their companies often report their financial performance as better than it is.

This list was topped by Nigeria (68%) and bottomed by Finland (7%).

Over 3,000 members of managements, supervisors and CEOs from 36 countries from Europe, Middle East, India and Africa were involved in the survey as part of which 3,459 anonymous interviews were conducted over the phone, internet or in person.
