ÄŒufer will present the government measures as part of a debate on macroeconomic imbalances which is being held after a European Commission report published in April found excessive imbalances in Slovenia and Spain.

European Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said at the time that Slovenia's situation was still manageable provided the government acted decisively and fast to address the mounting problems in the banking sector and the public finances. He stressed the Commission's further steps would depend on Slovenia's plans for reforms and financial stability.

These have been forwarded to Brussels on 10 May. The government's National Reforms Programme sets out measures to reinvigorate the ailing economy, while the Stability Programme plans to cut expenditure by some EUR 716.5m and raise extra revenues to the tune of some EUR 650m. Brussels has confirmed the receipt of the documents and said it would respond in detail on 29 May.

At the end of May, the Commission will evaluate efforts of all member states and decide whether to relax deficit reduction deadlines for individual member states. It will also decide whether to launch procedures against Slovenia and Spain over their excessive macroeconomic imbalances.
