Rožman said that NEK decided for a proactive approach in safety, adopting a US safety model, which was introduced last year.

The model is very adaptable and measures can be performed fast. The Krško plant started introducing it immediately after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011. Rožman said that NEK had some of the best results among nuclear power plants in Europe.

Last year NEK further increased safety in the case of earthquakes, extreme floods and other extraordinary events, such as a plane crash.

Among other things, the plant has been connected to an additional independent electricity source which could supply energy for up to a week.

NEK will be 30 years old this year, entering the second half of its lifespan, and the operator will invest EUR 200m to further improve the plant's safety systems in the coming years, Rožman said.
