Parliament to Debate Privatisation Package
The plan was okayed by the parliamentary Finance and Monetary Policy last week, and it is expected that it will garner sufficient support in the National Assembly as well.
The sale of the 15 companies, including telco Telekom Slovenije and bank NKBM, was endorsed on the committee by a vast majority, but MPs from both sides of the aisle voiced various concerns about the plan.
The support for the bill by the coalition Social Democrats (SD) is uncertain, but according to deputy group leader Matjaž Han most of the ten SD MPs would support the government's list of 15 companies slated for privatisation.
Support from the other coalition parties is ensured, while the opposition Democratic Party (SDS), New Slovenia (NSi) and People's Party (SLS), which support privatisation in principle, would like first to see state holdings in companies classified.
The opposition is concerned that without a classification of investments, privatisation could be carried out in a non-transparent manner. The SD shared this view, arguing that sale procedures should be supervised by the anti-graft watchdog and the Court of Audit.
The party also demands a strategy for state assets management, which is expected to be prepared by the end of September.
