hree of Slovenia's first-day medals were won in judo. Vlora Beđeti won the women's under 57kg category, and two silver medals went to Petra Nareks in women's under 52kg and to Andraž Jereb in men's under 66kg.

On the way to her first gold medal, Beđeti defeated Greece's Sofia Tsolani, Tugba Zehir of Turkey and then Italy's Martina Lo Giudice in the final.

"The first fight was the hardest, but when I broke the ice, it was much easier to continue," she said, thrilled with the victory.

Klinar won the 200m medley event with 2:14.40 at a safe distance ahead of Italy's Stefania Pirozzi and Carletta Toni.

Although tired, she then managed to bag a silver medal in 400m freestyle - with 4:11.61, only two tenths of a second slower than her personal best - behind Martina di Memme of Italy and ahead of Claudia Dascu Romeu of Spain.

"Of course I am very happy with the victory and second place, as my prime events are still ahead of me," Klinar said, but noted that she would also have strong competition in Pirozzi and Toni in 400m medley and 200m butterfly.

Apart from the two additional individual events, she will also compete in two relay races.

Slovenia's medal count at the Mediterranean Games was meanwhile opened by 17-year-old Ana Petrušić winning a bronze medal in taekwondo in women's 49-kg category.

Petrušić, who was very happy with her first medal in a major competition, defeated Fadia Farhani of Egypt with 9:3 in the first match, but lost to the second-seeded Noura Abdelsalam, also of Egypt, with 0:4 in the semi-finals.
