PM Bratušek Taking Part in Two-Day EU Summit
7
Bratušek and Barroso are expected to meet on Friday and focus on efforts to fix the Slovenian banking sector and on other recommendations issued to Slovenia by the Commission on 29 May.
One of the goals of the summit is to reach an agreement on concrete measures which would bring immediate effects and define an EU strategy for reducing the alarmingly high unemployment rate among the young.
European Council President Herman Van Rompuy presented in May a set of measures that are expected to bring quick results. One of them is incentives for employment of young people, for which EUR 6m has been earmarked in the EU budget for the 2014-2020 period.
Another measure is a guarantee scheme with which EU members will secure quality employment, further education, traineeship or internship to persons younger than 25 in four months after they become unemployed or finish their formal education.
Slovenia believes that the poorer of its two regions, East Slovenia, should be eligible for funds from the EU initiative for fighting unemployment of young people.
EU regions with a 25% unemployment rate among the young will be eligible for such aid. East Slovenia is below this threshold, but the entire country is recording the biggest growth in youth unemployment rate in the entire EU.
