Danuta and Amur, whose names will be changed shortly, are young tigers with reportedly very different personalities. The two-year old female is calm and used to human beings, while the male, six months younger, is more nonconformist and wilder, the zoo told the STA.

The new tigers will be accommodated with a new natural fence on a surface area of some 4,000 sq. metres, in what is one of the zoo's biggest projects in the last ten years. Their new home is one of the biggest ones in Europe and will be officially launched on Saturday with numerous activities throughout the day.

Zoo manager Zdenka Ban Fischinger said the new, bigger fence was a way to show that zoos were progressing towards an environment which was in the best interest of both visitors and the animals.

According to the zoo, the new natural fence meets all the required standards, which have recently been raised by the EU.

In the past year, the zoo has already accepted a pair of cheetahs from Sweden and a red panda from Spain, while they transferred some animals to other zoos, for example they sent some kangaroos to Sarajevo and a gibbon to France.
