Slovenia Favours Diplomatic Solution in Syria

"Slovenia has all along been a proponent of a diplomatic solution to the Syrian crisis," the ministry explained, adding that a decision on further steps would be taken "in due time".

The ministry stressed that it had immediately condemned in the strongest terms the attack in the suburbs of Damascus last Wednesday, when chemical weapons were allegedly used in an attack that reportedly killed 1,300 people.

"We assessed that these are serious accusations and a possible grave violation of international standards, which is why the event requires an immediate investigation."

The ministry expects both sides to allow UN inspectors "unlimited access to relevant areas and to all sources of information, so that they can complete the investigation as soon as possible".

"We still consider a prompt calling of the Geneva II convention as the right step" towards a "diplomatic (peaceful) solution or the setting up of an all-Syrian dialogue on the future of the country", the press release says.

The ministry moreover called for bringing everyone guilty of war crimes in Syria to justice before the International Criminal Court.
