Football: Šimundža Takes Over as Maribor Coach

Šimundža (42) played a majority of his football career in Maribor, and was also a member of the Maribor team that made it to the UEFA Champions League in the 1999/2000 season.

He also had short stints in Switzerland, Sweden and Belgium and played three matches for the national team between 1993 and 1999.

Šimundža served as an assistant coach in Maribor between 2008 and 2011. Last season he coached Slovenian premier league team Mura, and is coming to Maribor from the second-tier club Aluminij from Kidričevo.

The new coach will try to turn the tide for the Slovenian perennial champions after the team managed only one win in the last seven national championship matches.
