Krim Mercator, who were eliminated in the semi-final of the Champions League in the 2012/13 season and are two-time winners and five-time finalists of the prestigious competition, will also play Leipzig and Metz in the group stage in this season. Coach Tone Tiselj has set the semi-finals as the minimum goal.

Meanwhile, the new Champions League season is already well underway for the two Slovenian men's teams, which have both managed one win in two games.

Gorenje Velenje, the reigning national champions, began with a 35:33 home win against Drott Halmstad to lose the second game against defending European champions HSV in Hamburg. They will also play Aalborg, Naturhouse La Rioja and Flensburg-Handewitt in group D.

Celje Pivovarna Laško, who won the top European competition in 2004, started with a 21:24 defeat in Zagreb against HC Croatia Osiguranje Zagreb and recovered with a 29:22 win against St. Petersburg at home. Their remaining opponents in group A are Zaporožje, Veszprem, and Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
