Footbal: Slovenia Will Not Go to Brasil

Switzerland, which had already secured first place in Group E before the final game, were the slightly better team in the first half. Slovenia tried to push hard in the opening minutes but had their only real chance in the 28th minute when Nejc Pečnik failed to capitalise on a nice pass by Kevin Kampl.

The home team was then particularly dangerous in the closing minutes, especially via forward Admir Mehmedi, whose shots were just slightly off in the 38th and 39th minutes, and before that with a good free-kick by Reto Ziegler, which was stopped by Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanovič.

Switzerland remained hungry for a win in the second half, allowing for an open game that saw a series of semi-opportunities on both sides.

Slovenia were pushing hard, but the home team was dangerous in counter attacks. While one was stopped by Handanovič, Granit Xhaka beat him in the 74th minute with an open 18-metres shot.

Slovenia did not give up, coming close to scoring in the final minutes first via Tim Matavž, then via Zlatan Ljubijankič, whose header hit the woodwork, and last via Milivoje Novakovič, who squandered an almost 100% chance.

It was to no avail and what is more, Slovenia would have needed a win, as Iceland managed a 1:1 in Norway and thereby secured second spot in the group behind Switzerland and ahead of Slovenia.
