Active and passive smoking is harmful to all organs in the human body and is proven to cause diseases of respiratory organs, heart and blood vessels and other conditions.

According to the ministry, 90% of people suffering from lung cancer are smokers, and tobacco smoke in closed space is the biggest environmental risk factor for lung cancer.

Since 2007, when a smoking ban was introduced in all closed public and working spaces, exposure to second-hand smoke in Slovenia has reduced significantly both in public spaces and in homes.

People are getting increasingly aware of the fact that exposure to second-hand smoke is as harmful as smoking itself, the ministry said.

The ministry added that air pollution is an additional risk factor, which is why comprehensive measures for reducing ambient air pollution need to be taken.
