Tomos suspended moped assembly in Koper at the end of last year in order to focus solely on development and distribution of the Tomos brand.

However, the chosen Turkish partner was not in a position to provide end products of sufficient quality on time, so a decision was made to resume assembly in Koper until a new partner is found or the existing one meets Tomos's demands, the boss of Tomos dvokolesa Matjaž Kanduč has told the STA.

"During the time we noticed how much the market misses us. The demand is currently very strong. Fact is that at times of recession quality brands prosper," he says.

The company employed 12 new staff for the relaunch. At the moment it can finance the production of 500 mopeds a month, while the mid-term goal is 700, the level they want to keep at least in 2014.

Aside from moped for end users, Tomos also manufactures commercial two-wheeled vehicles intended for postal companies and other institutions.

Tomos's main market is Benelux, especially the Netherlands, as well as the markets of the former Yugoslavia, the US and Western Europe.

Tomos virtually has a monopoly in the supply of mopeds to the postal companies of former Yugoslavia, and also meets 60% of the Slovenian mail company's needs.

The range of products for private customers includes classic scooters, which are manufactured by Tomos's partner in the Middle East, and electric vehicles, which Kanduč says is the future.

The company has developed an electric moped in cooperation with the Šempeter company Letrika, which contributed the know-how in development of the electrical engine, and Tomos's owner Hidria.

The product is yet to see its production phase, with Kanduč regretting that the project has not received financial backing from the state, something that Tomos's competition benefits from.
