Sochi: Hockey Team With Solid Effort in "Training" Game With US
As the Olympic debutants Slovenia had already secured at least third place in group A ahead of the match against the US, they played relaxed against one of the best hockey teams in the world, which features a bunch of NHL star players. Slovenia today didn't play with first goalie Robert Kristan, also NHL superstar Anže Kopitar didn't play in the second half of the game (he was hit by a puck and slightly injured).
The Americans scored already with their first shot on the Slovenian goal in the 64th second of the match through their best attacker Phil Kessel.
The US did not let go after the early goal and Kessel scored another goal in the 5th minute to increase the lead to 2-0.
Slovenia had a power play in the second period after David Backes was sent off for hitting the Slovenian goalie, but failed to score.
The punishment came in the second half of the period, with the Americans scoring two goals in two minutes (Kessel 32nd, RyanMcDonagh 33rd).
The US remained composed in the last quarter, and in the 44th minute David Backes took advantage of the confusion in front of the Slovenian goal to put the puck home for 5-0.
Slovenia however managed to score a consolation goal in the very last minute through veteran Marcel Rodman.
