Slovenia Calls for Independent Ukraine Plane Crash Probe
The ministry underscored in a press release that only on the basis of such an investigation those responsible for the tragedy could be held accountable.
It moreover added that efforts must be stepped up to appease the situation in east Ukraine, which would also upgrade general international security.
The ministry expressed shock at the incident and extended condolences to the families and friends of the nearly 300 people on board who lost their lives as the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 crashed.
According to the ministry, there are no indications that Slovenian citizens were on the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, Slovenian flag carrier Adria Airways has said its planes do not fly over the area where the Malaysian air plane crashed, so no re-routing was needed.
The carrier added that it issued already in April a warning that in case one of its planes would have to fly over Ukraine, the pilots should avoid the airspace of the Simferopol flight control.
While the cause of the accident is not yet known, speculation that the plane was shot down started immediately after the crash. Meanwhile, both sides involved in the Ukraine conflict are accusing each other of having shot down the jet.
