The funicular, which started operating in late 2006, is to transport the 2 millionth passenger on Friday, a bank holiday. The Ljubljana Castle said in a press release on Wednesday that the 1 million mark was surpassed in late 2010, indicating how the funicular has grown in popularity.

More than 15,000 people used the funicular in the first seven months of 2014, 12.23% more than in the same period last year, the press release said. August is traditionally the busiest month of the year for the funicular, it added.

But not only the funicular, the castle has also posted a new record. On Saturday, as many as 9,120 people visited it in a record daily turnout at one of Ljubljana's most popular landmarks.
