Basketball Worlds: Second Win for Slovenia
Slovenia blitzed the Mexicans right out of the gate, taking a 12:0 lead early in the first quarter, with forward Zoran Dragić playing out of his mind to score 13 points in the first six minutes. The period ended with Slovenia leading 24:18.
Mexico pulled close early in the second with a 5:0 run and managed to even the score at 26:26, but Slovenian reserve point guard Jaka Klobučar took over to give Slovenia a comfortable lead going into the half-time (46:37).
Zoran Dragić and his better-known brother Goran together scored more than half of Slovenia's points in the first half (24).
Slovenia came out of the break with another nice run, increasing the lead to 12 points in the 24th minute (55:43), with Zoran Dragić burying his fourth three-point shot in as many tries. Mexico were kept at a double-digit margin for the remainder of the third quarter, which ended at 65:50 for Slovenia.
The last quarter was the opportunity for Slovenia's reserves as the win was already secured. Slovenia kept playing hard nevertheless and even had a 25-point lead on two occasions.
The Dragić brothers combined for 40 points for Slovenia, while also worth mentioning is centre Alen Omić, who chipped in 12 points. Mexico were led by centre Gustavo Ayon, who was perfect from the field to score 23.
Zoran Dragić told the press that the decisive factor was Slovenia's defence. "We started good, we showed our character and finished with a style. The defence was the key. If we continue like this, we will make a good result."
With two wins in as many games, Slovenia have already secured a spot in the elimination round of 16. The team is looking to avoid finishing fourth in the group because this will most likely mean a match-up with the reigning world champions United States in the knock-out stage.
