Slovenia were competitive against the NBA stars only in the first half, allowing the US to get a double-digit lead in the first quarter only on one occasion and finishing the period trailing 22:29.

Inspired by the fearless play by their leader Goran Dragić, Slovenia played even better in the second quarter and managed to get a split score in the period (20:20), also owing to good shooting from the three-point line.

However, the Americans started the third quarter much more aggressively, going on a quick 17:7 run to build a 17-point lead to blow the game open. Slovenia tried to recover from the shock and played much better in the remainder of the period, which ended with the US leading by 22 (86:64).

The plan in the last quarter was not to get blown off the floor, but it did not work, as the US opened the period with a 5:0 run and kept pressing the Slovenians on defence for easy fast-breaks.

The last minutes resembled an exhibition game in which the Americans tried to entertain the crowd with spectacular dunks and easy three pointers, with their lead increasing in one moment to an unbelievable 45 points.

Dragić, who led Slovenia with 13 points, was not disappointed with his team's play but with Slovenia once again getting a tough opponent in the quarter-finals. "We gave our best, the guys played hard," he said, also praising his NBA colleagues from the opposing side.

The US saw a balanced effort from their players, with six of them scoring in double digits. Kenneth Faried and Anthony Davis recorded double-doubles while Klay Thompson led all scorers with 20 points.

Slovenia has wrapped up their campaign at the FIBA Basketball World Cup with five wins and two losses and equalled their best result at world championships by making it to the top eight nations.
