Attending a conference on opportunities and obstacles in doing business with Iran, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS), Ramandi said Slovenia has the potential of becoming a hub for the region.

Along with the fields listed, he noted that imports of petrochemicals and business with gold and precious metals are also possible despite the sanctions against Iran.

Turning to obstacles in cooperation, he mentioned problems with the issuing of visas for Iranian entrepreneurs and with bank transactions. Also needed, according to the ambassador, is a one-stop information centre where investors would get acquainted with business opportunities.

Ramandi added it would be in the interest of both countries that an economic cooperation agreement be signed and a mixed economic commission formed as soon as possible.

GZS head Samo Hribar Milič said representatives of the Iran Embassy have displayed readiness to visit Slovenian companies wishing to strengthen cooperation. He expressed his hope that constrictions related to the sanctions be lifted allowing trade to increase.

Tanja Permozer of the Economic Development and Technology Ministry said that interest for cooperation is on the rise and that it would make sense to reopen an embassy in Tehran.

Stanislav Raščan from the Foreign Ministry pointed out Iran was Slovenia's third most important economic partner in the region. While sanctions are hampering business, a reversal of the negative trend is being noticed.
