Ban Ki-Moon Praises Slovenia's Role in W Balkans
The UN secretary general, who met Pahor on the sidelines of a climate summit and the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, was interested in the Brdo Process, so Pahor presented him the conclusions of the latest meeting of the initiative.
The president pointed out that Slovenia sees the initiative as a way of peaceful solving of open issues, which can help bring the Western Balkan countries closer to the EU.
Ban's office said that the secretary general acknowledged Slovenia's role in promoting prevention of atrocities, mediation and the fight against non-punishment of perpetrators of the worst crimes.
Pahor and Ban also exchanged views on global challenges such as climate change, growing extremism and terrorism and the Ebola outbreak. Ban urged Pahor to support international efforts for the fight against the deadly virus.
Pahor also met yesterday UN General Assembly President Sam Kutesa to discuss climate, development and other items from the UN agenda.
Talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan focussed on the Middle East and Turkey's role in the fights against Islamic State. Erdogan said that Turkey was carrying a heavy burden, accepting and protecting refugees from Syria, and was actively engaged in efforts to prevent foreign militants from entering Syria and Iraq through Turkey.
The pair also touched on bilateral cooperation between their countries, which is based on strategic partnership, and agreed that the Turkish President will pay a visit to Slovenia shortly.
Before attending a reception hosted by US President Barack Obama and his wife, Pahor met his Croatian counterpart Ivo Josipović.
On Monday evening Pahor had attended a reception by South African President Jacob Zuma to discuss the possibilities to improve business cooperation between Slovenia and South Africa, including through signing of economic agreements, and visa liberalisation.
On the sidelines of the reception, Pahor discussed the situation in Ukraine with the country's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, who heads the Ukrainian delegation in New York after President Petro Poroshenko unexpectedly cancelled attendance.
Topical issues in Africa topped the agenda of talks with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, while Pahor also met his counterpart from Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solis.
Pahor addressed the UN Climate Summit on Tuesday and will attend the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly today. He will speak at the event on Friday.
Today he is scheduled to meet the presidents of Iran, Poland and Serbia.
He will also attend a traditional lunch hosted by Ban and a reception hosted by top EU officials.
