Vogel to Welcome First Skiers at Weekend

Considering the early start, the ski slopes and the broader tourism destination of Bohinj in the north-west hope for a bountiful tourism season this year, but much will depend on the weather.

Apart from fresh snow, the decision for the pre-season launch was prompted by the fine weather forecast for this weekend, the boss of the operator of the Vogel ski lifts, BoĊĦtjan Mencinger, says.

After the promotional weekend, the ski lifts will be closed to wait for fresh snowfall, considering the slopes depend entirely on natural snow.

At any event, the aerial cableway to the slopes will be re-started by 6 December at the latest and Mencinger hopes the remaining lifts to be in operation too by mid-December.

"Provided enough snow by 15 December, the season will definitely be good, if not, we are impacted by every day," Mencinger told reporters on Friday.

If the results in December are similar to those in the same month last year, the ski lift operator will generate profit for the third year running, as revenue by end of September trumped the figure for the whole of 2013.

The main new feature this year is that ski passes will be available to visitors at hotels or on train, which means shorter queues at the box office, marketing official Matej Kandare says.

The children's area has also been upgraded and the catering offerings improved, and officials say that the bookings for the accommodation facilities are looking good too.
