People's Party in Deep Crisis and Without Credible Leader in Sight

Originally conceived as an opportunity for a restart under a new leadership, the congress has been postponed several times and even this week a doomed attempt was launched to defer it.

Following weeks of nominations that saw the quiet withdrawal of several high-profile names, only two candidates remain: Damjan Medved and Primož Jelševar, respectively the former head of the party's youth wing and member of the executive committee.

Reports suggest many in the party are unhappy about the selection, as both candidates are largely unknown to the public and seen as too weak to engineer a turnaround.

This sets the stage for a potentially chaotic congress, as the delegates may actually vote to postpone the leadership election, or change the rules of procedure and allow last-minute candidacies.
