Thousands to Brave Cold Weather to Welcome New Year Outdoors
The organisers are expecting thousands to show up despite forecasts of freezing temperatures and wind.
Concert venues are being prepared in four squares in the capital of Ljubljana, with the main stage set up in Congress Square, where a special celebration for children will also be organised for the first time this year.
In case of clear weather in Ljubljana, the traditional fireworks will be lit over Ljubljana Castle at midnight, otherwise the entry to the new year will be marked by cannon fire.
The main event in the country's second largest city Maribor will be held in Leon Å tukelj Square, while numerous surrounding bars and restaurants are also expected to be full. Many residents of Maribor will take a ride on the gondola to the Pohorje hill.
In Celje, children will have their party first between 10 AM and 1 PM in Krekov Square, which will also be the venue of the evening celebration ushering in the new year.
An eventful last day of the year is also expected on the Slovenian coast, with live music concerts held in the squares of Koper, Izola and Piran. Special parties, workshops and dance shows for children will also be organised in Koper and Piran.
Organised outdoor celebrations will also be held in the streets and squares of Kranj, Slovenj Gradec, Murska Sobota, Ptuj, Velenje, Nova Gorica and Novo mesto.
