Based on data provided by four in five accommodation providers in the city, the local tourism board puts the number of overnight stays at just over one million, a 6% rise compared to the year before.

The figure shows Ljubljana overnight stays doubled in ten years, as it recorded half a million overnight stays in 2004.

December was the key month for local tourism, as overnight stays surged a fifth compared to the year before.

Tourism Ljubljana attributes the figures to improved activities online, in particular on social networks, while the Visit Ljubljana website also clocked up one million visitors.

The city also received a boost when it was declared by Lonely Planet as one of the top ten European destinations for 2014.
