The Iliad Opening at Cankarjev Dom Tonight

Directed by Jernej Lorenci, one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed Slovenian theatre directors, the show is a co-production by the country's No. 1 theatre house, SNG Drama Ljubljana, as well as Mladinsko Theatre and Cankarjev dom, Slovenia's biggest cultural institution.

The Iliad was taught in school as something grand and magnificent, but they did not say that it was "a massacre that presaged all the massacres that happened, are happening and will happen", Lorenci says.

The production is based on the 1950 translation by Anton Sovre, the only one available in Slovenian and a work that earned the translator a Prešeren Prize, the highest Slovenian accolade for the arts, the same year.

Given that the epic is melodic, written in dactylic hexameter, music will play a prominent role. Lorenci told the STA in an interview that the music score would be very diverse, ranging from ancient music to world music and other genres.

Jure Heningman will play Achilles, as stand in for the injured Sebastian Cavazza, with Tina Potočnik cast as Helen, Aljaž Jovanovič as Paris and Marko Mandič as Hector.
