The 31-year-old Maze was fifth after the first run, but appeared short on burst in the second run after a gruelling schedule which saw her compete in all five individual events.

She crossed the line 2.48 seconds behind the winner, Mikaela Shiffrin of the US.

The home crowd favourite cruised to victory ahead of Sweden's Frida Hansdotter, who was 0.34 seconds adrift. Sharka Strachova of the Czech Republic was third, 0.77 seconds behind the winner.

After the race, Maze admitted to struggling in the second run. "I was completely tired. After the race, I even had some trouble getting my breath back," she told public broadcaster RTVSLO.

She will have little time to rest and celebrate her medal haul in Vail, as she is scheduled to compete in the World Cup on home soil next week when the women's tour comes to Maribor for the Golden Fox competition.
