Slovenia Marking Maritime Day

The resolution states that the Slovenians have always been a maritime-oriented nation and that the country will preserve and develop this tradition in the future.

The document commits Slovenia to lead an economic and development policy that will contain the maritime element, including the support for its sole sea port of Koper.

Koper must become an important port for the Central European area, which is why transport links between the port and Hungary and Austria competitive to those of the nearby ports must be established, the resolution says.

Commissioner Bulc's attendance at the ceremony is expected to give a boost to Slovenia's plans to construct a second railway line between Koper and the railway hub Divača.

The project applying for EU funds is necessary as the existing single-track railway is expected to reach its maximum capacity in just a few years based on transshipment figures in the port of Koper.
