Franja will be one of the sixteen historical sites and objects across Europe considered to be "milestones in the creation of today's Europe", according to the Commission's website.

They include the Peace of Westphalia, the historic centre of Athens, the Abbey of Cluny and the house of Robert Schuman, the "father of Europe".

The labels are conferred to strengthen the sense of belonging to Europe, especially among the younger generations, and to strengthen inter-cultural dialogue, Slovenia's permanent representation office at the EU said in a press release.

The label highlights the symbolic value of the site and promotes the role it played in history and in the shaping of the EU and the European culture.

Franja will be represented at tonight's ceremony by the head of the Idrija City Museum Ivana Leskovec and curator Milojka Magajne, while Slovenia will be represented by Ambassador Rado Genorio and his wife.
