Some of the staff are to be reassigned to other units of the US multinational, but most are likely to lose their jobs, the STA has learnt from well-placed sources.

The company would not comment on the plans officially, but said in response to a question by the STA that it was in talks with the employees on "changes brought about by an overhauled model of operations in Slovenia".

The company also said that with a view to competitiveness in the rapidly growing market it would continue to aspire for HP to "become even more agile, cost-effective and deepen its close cooperation with its partner network".

Unofficial information has it that the technological giant decided to wind down the Slovenia subsidiary due to market saturation, stagnation in sales, and costly labour.

Hewlett-Packard has also been facing financial difficulties elsewhere. It posted a 5% fall in net revenue in the first quarter of the year.

The multinational has been undergoing restructuring since 2012 when it announced the closure of around 55,000 jobs.
