Basketball: Tajfun Barrels to First National Title

In the final act of a finals featuring two of the smaller clubs in the league, Tajfun kept its composure to close out the series 3-1 with a 67-65 win.

It was a scene of utter jubilation in the small primary school arena which was packed to its capacity of 700 for the biggest moment in the history of the club from north-eastern Slovenia.

Led by fountain-of-youth power forward Dragiša Drobnjak, 37, Tajfun had to beat the odds just to make the final, defeating five-time consecutive national champions Krka of Novo mesto in the semis.

In what would be a perfect storm for a club whose name literally translates to typhoon, they were matched against their equals (and neighbours) in Rogaška in a David versus David series.

It marked the end of a sensational playoffs which saw both Krka and fellow Slovenian basketball powerhouse Olimpija of Ljubljana ousted before they could revive their traditional rivalry in the finals.

The unceremonious fall of the two clubs which have until today split all but one national title since 1991 among them bodes for a busy off-season in the league.

The trail of devastation left behind by Tajfun is expected to require a major rebuilding effort in Ljubljana and Novo mesto.
