Tour of Slovenia: Slovenia's Roglič Brings Home Victory

Roglič, a former ski jumper who switched to professional cycling four years ago, catapulted himself into the lead in Saturday's key mountain stage, which thinned the field at the top of the standings, and did not look back today.

The stage victory went to Roglič's team-mate Marko Kump, who together with the rest of the Adria Mobil team helped protect the leader from the challengers.

After the race, Roglič said the yellow jersey was never under threat in the final stage. "It was a somewhat unconventional stage, as the breakaway didn't happen immediately...My only thought throughout the day was protecting the lead. Once we reached Novo mesto, the fans gave us a massive lift," the 25-year-old said.

Second place in the overall standings went to Spain's Mikel Nieve (Sky), who was five seconds behind the winner, while two-time Tour of Slovenia winner Jure Golčer of Slovenia (Felbermayer) was third, eight seconds adrift.

The red jersey for overall winner by points went to Davide Appollonio of Italy (Androni), while the polka-dot jersey for best climber went to Italy's Mauro Finetto (Southeast).

The eleventh Slovenian victory at the biggest professional cycling race in the country is also the first since 2012, when Janez Brajkovič walked away with the title.
