The 28-year-old Katusha rider finished five seconds ahead of Britain's Geraint Thomas (Sky) in the overall rankings.

Špilak came from 47 seconds behind the day eight leader, Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), to snatch the overall victory on the final day.

Although he crossed the line behind Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) in the time trial, his time sufficed for the win as the Dutchman trailed the Slovenian by 37 seconds coming into the stage.

Dumoulin finished third, 19 seconds behind the Slovenian.

It is the latest in a line of notable achievements for Špilak on Swiss roads, as he won at the Tour de Romandie in 2010, while also finishing second there for the past three years.
