The 19-year-old has signed a three-year contract with an optional two-year extension.

The financial details of the deal have not been revealed, though public broadcaster TV Slovenija reported Maribor earned a EUR 700,000 transfer fee.

Zahović is the son of Maribor sports director and one of Slovenia's best players of all time, Zlatko Zahović.

He has played 45 national league games for Maribor so far and scored 13 goals. He also scored in the Champions League last season.

Heerenveen finished seventh in the Dutch league last year.
