When finished, the campus will comprise 5,488 square-metre of areas designed for educational and cultural activities as well as offering subsidised housing for students.

There are currently nine buildings totalling 2,684 sq metres on the location which are undergoing renovation so they will be ready on time, the head of the Ljubljana Student Organisation (ŠOU) has said.

"The investment has been divided into three parts, of which 40 to 50 percent will be completed this year," Andrej Klasinc has told the STA. "ŠOU reckons the whole project could be completed by May 2017."

Klasinc says the investment should not exceed EUR 1.8m in all, with the first phase valued at EUR 900,000. "We're doing our best so the investment doesn't threaten liquidity of ŠOU, whose annual budget is 3.5 million euros."

The campus will host student associations and NGOs, an info point, an academic reading room, a discount shop, sports infrastructure as well as more than 800 sq metres of lecture rooms.

Klasinc says the lecture halls will be offered for rent at favourable terms to Ljubljana colleges which face shortage of space. Talks are also under way for a student job agency to move there.

In the second phase, which is slated for completion by September 2016, the campus will also get a students' canteen, a children's playground, a climbing wall and outdoor fitness equipment.

ŠOU would like for the campus to become a hub where students will be able to develop their potential, socialize, engage in sports and hold concerts and other cultural events.

The opening on 1 October coincides with the beginning of a new academic year. On the occasion, ŠOU also plans a ten-day programme of events to mark its 25th anniversary.
