Šimundža told the press that he was withdrawing because of a lack of true energy in the club. "I believe the new wind and the new energy will give the team the spark it needs."

Maribor lost to Olimpija 0:3 in round six of the premier league Sunday, but it has struggled since the start of the season, most notably since it failed to qualify for the Europa League.

The club had played in European leagues for three previous seasons, including last year in the Champions League.

It is currently third in the league table with 10 points, behind the surprise leaders Gorica (15) and the resurgent Olimpija (13).

Šimundža took over as coach on 30 November 2013. His record over 100 games is 56 wins, 22 draws and 22 losses.

Šimundža said he was "very proud of two years of success," adding: "I'm leaving with my head up."

Saša Gajser, the assistant coach, will provisionally take over.
