Launched by energy company Petrol in cooperation with BMW Group Slovenija and BTC on Tuesday, the station in front of the Crystal Palace is suitable for most electric cars available in the market.

Batteries are charged up to 80% within good 20 minutes, a release from BTC said. This compares to four hours at the usual charging stations.

The new facility enables simple charging of all types of electric cars by means of three different cables with appertaining connectors, according to BTC.

The universal fast charging station is comparable to those planned by the state on Slovenia's motorways.

Dean Herenda of the Infrastructure Ministry on the occasion noted that Slovenia planned to set up a network of 26 fast charging stations by the end of the year.

There are currently 153 electric cars registered in Slovenia, according to a report by the public broadcaster TV Slovenija.

According to the website run by power company Elektro Ljubljana, there are over 160 charging stations of different types in the country.
