Slovenia Lose to Latvia to Get Eliminated from Eurobasket

Slovenia seemed sluggish right from the start and played as if they were surprised by the aggressiveness and excellent shooting by Latvia and never managed to take a comfortable lead.

The teams were pretty equal in the first half, but in the third quarter the Latvians opened a quick 10-point lead (67:57) and never let Slovenia come closer than four points.

Slovenia's best scorer and best overall player was Zoran Dragić, who scored 17 points and seemed like the only player ready to take a stand against the tough Latvians today.

Slovenian players were disappointed after the loss. Forward Jure Balažič said that the opponents "were simply better and more aggressive", while Dragić added that the team had failed to stick to the plan and match the aggressiveness of the Latvians.

The exit in the round of 16 is Slovenia's worst result in the past six European basketball championships. Between 2005 and 2013 Slovenia managed to make it among top eight European nations in the game.

The early exit also means that Slovenia will not have a chance to compete for a spot at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio as only the winner and runner-up qualify directly and teams ranked 3-7 make it to an Olympic qualifying tournament.
