A record 146 films had been submitted for the FSF, with organisers selecting 97. This year's competition programme will include 63 feature-length and short films competing for the Vesna Awards, which are named after the Slovenian 1953 film classic Vesna made by František Čap.

At the same time, the Metod Badjura Award will be given out for lifetime achievement. It is not yet known who will be honoured this year with the award, named after the first Slovenian film director of photography.

Among the newer feature films, the festival will screen "Zenit" (High Sun) by Croatia's Dalibor Matanić, which tells three love stories across three different decades. The film also competed in the Un Certain Regard section of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.

A highlight of the documentary film section will be "Dom" (Home) by Metod Pevec, which intertwines the stories of several Bosnian immigrants and youngsters from broken homes living together in a boarding house.

This year's festival will also include discussions with the film directors, a musical programme, and several exhibitions.

The award winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on 20 September.
