Cerar has announced he will be discussing topics that are vital for Slovenia in New York such as the refugee crisis and human rights and the Ukraine crisis.

The fate of migrants in the Mediterranean and especially asylum seekers from Syria is a highly topical item on the agenda of debates at the UN headquarters this year.

Cerar has underscored the need for an international effort to tackle the roots of the crisis.

He is due to meet UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday.

The general debate of the 70th anniversary session of the General Assembly, which started on Monday, is held on the theme "the road ahead for peace, security and human rights".

These are also Slovenia's priorities in the UN with concrete discussions on the topic to be held by Erjavec, who is visiting New York until 1 October.
