Slovenia settle for silver at European volleyball championship

The winners of this year's FIVB Volleyball World League defeated Slovenia in straight sets 3:0 (19, 27, 27), in what was actually a battle of equals except for all but the first set.

While France were decisive in the first set, the remaining two could have easily be won by Slovenia, in particular the second set, in which Slovenia wasted a total of five set points.

This is the first European championship title in volleyball for France ever, while Slovenians won their first medal ever. Slovenia's previous best result at European championships was ninth place in 2001 and 2011.

Slovenian captain Tine Urnaut was voted into the best team of the tournament as the best outside spiker.

Slovenia secured the medal by pulling out one of the biggest upsets in major volleyball competitions, defeating the heavily favoured Italians in the semi-finals, after beating world champions Poland in the quarter-finals.
