Å kofja Loka gets bypass road after 40-year wait

A major project that cost almost EUR 52m, the bypass involves a 712-metre tunnel, seven bridges and six junctions. It received EUR 35m in co-funding from the EU.

Planning for the bypass, which diverts the heavy traffic away from the town's narrow medieval streets, started almost 40 years ago, with the final route confirmed in 1991.

The financial details were however not resolved before 2006, while delays in the construction were then caused by protracted expropriation, permit and public procurement procedures, as well as bankruptcies of the builders.
