Ljubljana gets first public orchard

Located in the Vič district in the southwest of Ljubljana, the orchard's fruit trees will need a few years before they start bearing fruit, municipality representatives said on Wednesday.

The orchard will contain various types of fruit trees, such as apple, pear, and plum. Visitors will also be able to choose among several species of fruit not native to Slovenia, including permisson and elderberries.

According to the municipality's website, the orchard project was launched after the designation of Ljubljana as European Green Capital 2016.

During the first five years, maintenance of the orchard will be carried out by the Agricultural Institute and the city's Department for Environmental Protection.
