The new owner, MPO Kabel, plans to strengthen the brand presence in existing markers in Europe and the US, and at least double production from the current 400-500 mopeds per year.

"We have already started talks with some buyers," MPO Kabel director Iztok Pikl told the press on Wednesday, noting that he wanted to reinvigorate the once legendary brand.

Tomos director Matjaž Kanduč remains at the helm and production will remain based in Koper.

Pikl said the company was likely to hire given the ambitious goals, but noted that it was still too early to say. "First we have to see where we are."

Tomos, founded in 1954 and once the biggest maker of mopeds in Yugoslavia, makes traditional mopeds as well as s-scooters.

The company posted sales of EUR 3.2m for 2014 but ended the year with a net loss of EUR 137,100.
