Coin to commemorate EU flag anniversary

The coin will bear an image of the twelve EU stars morphing into a human chain. The design shows the flag as a uniting symbol for EU citizens and was created by George Stamatopoulos, an engraver at the Greek Central Bank. The coin will be available at branch offices of Deželna banka Slovenije and Banka Slovenije.

This year Slovenia has already issued a collector's coin in June to mark the 500th anniversary of the first written Slovenian text and a two-euro commemorative coin in November to mark the 2000th anniversary of the first urban settlement in the area of today's Ljubljana, the Roman Emona.

The idea for the EU flag's design was conceived in 1955, when the Council of Europe adopted the image of the 12-star circle on a blue background as its symbol. In 1983 it was adopted by the European Parliament and two years later the heads of the European Community approved it as the flag of the EU.
