The SNG Maribor Ballet ensemble will perform Romeo and Juliet, a dramatic ballet choreographed by Valentina Turcu to the music of Sergei Prokofiev, in Maribor's Main Square, on 6 September.

Admission to the event is free, and is meant as a gift to the city's residents at the start of the new theatre season.

The production premiered at the SNG Maribor theatre in 2012 and stars Catarina de Meneses and Ionut Dinita in the leading roles.

Turcu's choreography remains faithful to Shakespeare's play, offering a vision of a bold, sensual and brutal era in which life and death were decided in the blink of an eye, according to the theatre.

In case of bad weather, the open-air ballet show will take place the next day, 7 September.
