Acclaimed local and foreign cellists and other musicians will preform a series of concerts at the Cellofest Ljubljana festival.

Held for the fifth year running, the festival will see seven concerts at select venues, masterclasses with acclaimed foreign cello professors and a three-day workshop for a hundred of youngest cellists.

The concept of the festival is to present the cello in various roles, as a solo instrument, a solo instrument with the orchestra and piano, a versatile pop music instrument and an ensemble instrument.

The festival will open with a concert by the Cedéz Quartet from Slovenia at the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory with a programme including Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings.

Two concerts at the the Ljubljana City Museums on 20 October will feature the complete oeuvre of Ludwig van Beethoven for piano and cello.

Heirs to the great Hungarian school, cellist István Várdai and pianist Zoltán Fejérvári will perform at Cankarjev Dom on 22 October, and multi award-winning German-Japanese cellist Danjulo Ishizaka, a disciple of Mstislav Rostropovich, will appear as a soloist at a concert by the Ljubljana Symphony Orchestra at the same venue on 24 October.

The final concert, at Kino Šiška on 25 October, will see cellist and singer-songwriter Marie Spaemann perform Metamorphosis with accordion player Christian Bakanic.
